Neighbourhood

Deer Park is an upscale, midtown neighbourhood centred on the intersection of Yonge Street and St. Clair Ave. It’s a blend of residential surrounded by urban conveniences.

Deer Park is bounded by Chaplin Crescent to the North, Farnham Ave to the South and Yonge Street to the East, Oriole Parkway to the North-West and Avenue Road to the South-West.

History

Deer Park was first habituated by its original First Nations settlers who called the area “Mushquoteh” which means ‘a meadow in the woods where the deer come to graze”. In 1837, the Heath family bought a large piece of the area, and named their estate Deer Park. The property was subdivided in 1846 and was entirely sold off by 1874. The area began to grow so much that by the 1850’s there was a school, a race track, and a hotel right on the corner of Yonge Street and St. Clair Avenue. The area quickly grew from the farmland to a residential community and by 1908 it was annexed by the City of Toronto. In the 1930s it became an upper-middle class residential area, which it remains today.

Real Estate

The majority of properties in Deer Park are a combination of detached and semi-detached, Tudor-style construction. There are also several newer townhouses and luxury condominium buildings. It is a fantastic location to enjoy the close proximity to David Balfour Park, and many vantage points to ravines and incredible views of the downtown skyline from high-rise balconies. Prices vary dramatically in the area as there are many multi-million dollar homes, combined with smaller semi-detached houses, townhomes as well as condominium apartments.

Living in Deer Park

Access to all emenities are close by for Deer Park residents including: Transit, parks, restaurants, schools are all within walking distance. As well, heading north, Deer Park residents can enjoy the services within Davisville Village. Considering Deer Park is located in quite an urban setting, recreational is plentiful. The Rosehill Reservoir is a large green space with a cobblestone lined pool and beautiful flowerbeds. David Balfour Park is a popular location and destination for cyclists, joggers and walkers alike. For those who are looking for a hike, there is access through the playground to the Vale of Avoca and Rosedale Valley Ravines. At the north end of Deer Park is the Oriole Park playground which has a playground, tennis courts, a wading pool and access to the Belt Line.

Transportation

Regular TTC bus service runs along Yonge Street, Avenue Road, and St. Clair Avenue. All homes in the Deer Park neighbourhood are within walking distance of St. Clair subway station. It is a 15 minute drive to downtown Toronto and 20 minute drive to highways and expressways.
